A woman in New Jersey was killed when she was run over not just once, but twice, by the same SUV.
The vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee, which is a full-sized SUV. It was backing out of a driveway as the woman was apparently walking behind it. This was right around 9:44 in the morning; that's when the call came in to police.
Apparently, the Jeep hit the woman initially when backing up. It knocked her down. The driver felt the impact and then drove forward, into the driveway. Unfortunately, the Jeep then rolled back out again and ran over her a second time. This time, the woman was trapped beneath the Jeep, pinned against the pavement.
Police responded, and emergency crews said that the woman had already passed away at the crash site. She was just 38 years old.
Neighbors were crying as they watched the police work to cover the body with a sheet, as it was still under the vehicle.
At this point, no charges have been filed, though that is common while an investigation is being carried out. Reports did not identify the driver of the Jeep or explain why it rolled back out of the driveway a second time. It's unclear what the extent of the woman's injuries were the first time she was hit.
Fatal car accidents happen more often than many people realize, and they take many forms. They're impossible to predict or avoid in all situations. It is important for family members to know all of their legal options when someone is seriously injured or killed in an accident.
